Cultivate LA Year 6




Six years ago Toni Schulman saw our little Lasagna Cupcakes™ in Daily Candy (our first press!) and asked if we would serve them at Cultivate LA  (remember here?). At the time I read that this was the annual fundraiser for a nonprofit that worked to serve teen foster youth by assisting them with housing, independence, and counseling, so of course we said yes since foster youth is made up of the most marginalized children of our society and that’s where we want to put our weight behind. Since that first event in October of 2009, we have fully committed ourselves to this mission on our own by hiring and mentoring foster youth, so we are more invested than ever to continue our partnership, six years in a row, helping to raise funds for the work of United Friends of the Children.

This year, The Hollywood Reporter calls out our chef Matt as one of their “celebrities” in the line up which is a far cry different than where we were six years ago (working out of our apartment kitchen!) when Suzanne Goin held that position. I was star struck meeting her then, now I’m truly star struck and swelling with love and pride seeing our own Chef Matt make beautiful presentations like this seasonal Crostini Station with his big, big heart, wide enough to fit in all of the sorrow associated with this population and positive enough to work daily to try and turn it around. We’ve come a long way, and now with partners such as UFC, we are dedicated soldiers to fill in the huge gap our government leaves in supporting foster youth. They desperately need assistance to avoid becoming a statistic, to help them rise up and leave the system behind them. It takes more than a village to ensure this fate, it takes our whole country.
